The Untold Consequences for a White-Collar Wife

Lisa Lawler

02/07/2022 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM)

1 CPE Credit     .

Description:

Having experienced being a white-collar wife, for the past ten years, Lisa Lawler has been coaching innocent spouses through the legal, economic, and emotional fallout of a partner’s occupational crime. “When a lone actor commits embezzlement, all they need is a criminal defense attorney, but their innocent spouse needs a tax attorney, a divorce attorney, a constitutional law attorney, and sometimes, even their own criminal defense attorney.” Lisa has mentored over 150 white-collar wives and has received quite the education regarding the lack of due process afforded to innocent spouses. Lisa says, “I realized something needed to be done to curb not only the social stigma wives face, (guilt by association), but to shine a light on a legal system that disregards an innocent spouse’s right to her portion of the marital estate in civil asset seizure.” You will be alarmed by what Lisa and other wives have endured, and you will be inspired by her work as the founder of The White-Collar Wives Project.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the emotional trauma for the spouse and family of a fraud perpetrator
  • Describe the financial and legal consequences for the spouse of a fraud perpetrator
  • Identify strategies to address the challenges faced by a white-collar spouse

Speaker:

Lisa Lawler received a unique and valuable education regarding the men and women who commit occupational crime that led her to become recognized as an expert in the emerging field of compliance and fraud deterrence consulting. As the former wife of an embezzler, she knows the ruinous consequences families face as a result of a marital partner's occupational/financial crime prosecution. She has been working in the field of white-collar crime advocacy for nearly ten years in many roles: innocent spouse, coach-consultant, compliance and deterrence thought leader, trailblazer, media and legal consultant, author, speaker and white-collar family advocate.

She is the founder of the non-profit organization, White-Collar Wives Project, and her private online support group, "The Secret Lives of White-Collar Wives," now has triple digit membership from four continents. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, The American Bar Association Journal, Market Watch, and the ACFE.
