2022 Fall Seminar 

St. Edward's University, 3001 S. Congress (Fleck Hall #314). Refer to Registration Confirmation for parking requirements. You must pre-register your vehicle to avoid a ticket. 

Description:   Multiple sessions will be presented for a total of 6 CPE hours, including Fraud Ethics (2 hrs), for a discounted fee of $75 plus lunch is provided for in-person participants.  Sessions will cover the topics of effectively presenting a fraud/audit report, case studies of embezzlement & tax fraud , IRS criminal investigations, and Fraud Ethics.

Agenda, Speakers & Topics: 

8:30-9:00a  Coffee & Networking

9:00-10:30am "From Fraud Report to Court" by Dr. Billy Earnest, Assistant Professor of Communication, St. Edward's; Expert advice on how to assure your presentation conveys the story & facts that are in your report (with some emphasis on graphs)

10:30a-noon  "IRS Criminal Investigations Unit Duties & Recent Cryptocurrency Investigations" by Michael Morris, IRS Supervisory Special Agent, & Andrew Mayo, IRS Special Agent & CFE, IRS Criminal Investigations (Houston Field Office, Austin Post of Duty); Descriptions of the CI unit responsibilities within the IRS and of recent investigations of crimes involving cryptocurrency

1:00-2:00p  "Tall Texas Tales of Fraud" by Dr. Carolyn Conn, CPA, CFE, Clinical Associate Professor, Texas State University; Analysis of the many red flags that were missed in an embezzlement and a tax fraud case and internal controls that could have prevented the frauds.

2:00-4:00p  "Best Practices for an Ethical Workplace to Prevent (Minimize) Fraud" by an expert panel, including Erin Anker, CPA, CFE; Travis Casner, CFE Discussion of what it takes to create an ethical work environment that prevents/minimizes fraud. [counts for 2 hours Fraud Ethics]

Learning Objectives - After attending these sessions, participants will be able to:

  • Implement strategies to make presentations of their fraud (& audit) reports more effective for multiple audiences
  • Describe the red flags that were missed in an embezzlement and tax fraud case and internal controls that could have prevented the frauds.
  • Identify & explain areas of concern in current IRS criminal investigations including cryptocurrency fraud
  • Implement & reinforce best practices to create an ethical environment that facilitates the prevention (minimization) of fraud
Recommended CPE credit & Field of Study:  6 total CPE hours (including 2 hours of Fraud Ethics) & field of Specialized Knowledge

Refund, Cancellation & No-Show Policy: Refunds of fees paid for internet-based sessions may be provided only if registrant contacts Austin ACFE within 24 hours of the start time of the session & documents an emergency or similar event that prevented participation. For in-person events, registration cancellations and refund request must be made by contacting Austin ACFE within 5 calendar days from the start time of the session.  Cancellations received less than 5 days prior to events will not be refunded except for exigent circumstances.  Contact must be made via email to: info@austinacfe.com

In the event a registrant does not show up to an event, the registration cost will be forfeited. If payment at the door was the selected method, the registrant will be billed for the full cost of the event. The Austin ACFE reserves the right to bar from future events registrants who routinely register and fail to pay and/or attend the event.


For events provided by the Austin chapter at no cost to registrants, there will be no refunds.


Complaint Resolution Policy:  Any concerns or complaints about registration for an event must be made within 14 calendar days of the event (with the event date counting as day 1) in writing to:  info@austinacfe.com  


NASBA Registry: The Austin Area chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website: www.nasbaregistry.org
